The social safety net poses different challenges to artists than to employees in permanent positions — particularly when it comes to retirement and phases without work. Actors are often not self-employed, but are given temporary contracts. This affects unemployment benefits, health insurance, retirement benefits, the general requirement to carry insurance, and coverage in the event of illness when not entitled to sick pay.
