In radical, subjective, and essayistic form, Jutta Brückner combines feminist themes and a critique of social hierarchies. Three films by this director, which she regards as a trilogy exploring mother-daughter relationships, span a period from the late 1970s to the present day. The Munich International Film Festival is showcasing not only her magnum opus, THE HUNGER YEARS (1980), but also her debut film, DO RIGHT AND FEAR NO ONE (1975), and her latest work, IN MY MOTHER’S MIRROR (2026). In this FilmTalk, Brückner and her longtime collaborator Margarethe von Trotta, both icons of New German Cinema, reflect on their careers, their perspectives, and the power of cinema.
